The Myths of Rescue
There are many misconceptions about horse rescue organizations and the animals they care for.
Here are some common myths about rescue:
1. Myth: Rescue Animals are "Broken" or Have Behavioral Issues
a. Reality: While some rescue animals may have experienced trauma or neglect, many are well-adjusted, loving animals who just need a second chance. With proper care and training, they can thrive.
2. Myth: You Can’t Find Specific Breeds in Rescue
a. Reality: There are breed-specific rescues for virtually every type of animal, including horses. People may be surprised to learn that even rare breeds can end up in rescues due to various circumstances.
3. Myth: Rescue Animals are Older
a. Reality: While some animals in rescue may be older, rescues often have animals of all ages, from young foals to senior animals. Some younger animals may come to rescues due to accidents or abandonment.
4. Myth: Rescue Animals are Not Healthy
a. Reality: Many rescues work hard to rehabilitate animals and provide them with necessary medical care. Often, animals in rescues are healthier than some that come from breeders or other sources that don't provide proper care.
5. Myth: It’s Expensive to Adopt from a Rescue
a. Reality: While there may be adoption fees, these often cover medical expenses, vaccines, microchipping, and other necessary services. In contrast, buying from a breeder can be much more expensive, with fewer guarantees of health.
6. Myth: Rescue Animals Can't Bond with New Owners
a. Reality: Many animals form deep, lasting bonds with their new owners, especially when they feel safe and cared for. Rescued horses can become incredibly loyal and trusting when they’re given love and attention.
7. Myth: Rescue Facilities Have Lower Standards of Care
a. Reality: Reputable rescues often go above and beyond to provide the best care possible. They work closely with veterinarians, farriers, trainers, and volunteers to ensure the well-being of the animals.
8. Myth: Rescues are funded by the Federal Government
a. Reality: Although there are a few horse-specific grants out there, there is no Federal funding for horse rescues. Rescues are maintained by private donations from supporters in their communities. If you can, please offer support as this is the only safety net for at risk horses.
