Day in the Life at Happy Trails Horse Rescue

Bright and early every day we feed hay and water the herd. We muck every pen and make sure all fences and salt blocks are in good shape. We place eyes on every horse, checking for wounds or issues that need attention. We rotate around the property – cleaning barns, alley ways, shelters, fields, round pen and arena space. We make sure irrigation is running smoothly in summertime for the best grazing for the herd – and for cooling off in the sprinklers! All horses are let out onto the field with the exception of those with health or diet limitations, such as our lil’ Stewie, the Shetland pony. He only gets on the field for a few hours a week in order to keep him slim and trim.

By days end we go through the sorting ritual – gathering everyone off the field and into their correct pens. Each horse is paired with buddies with similar diets. Sally, Violet and Stewie get their own “apartments” as they all need special diets. Everyone gets their own grain mixture which includes vitamins and supplements unique to the individual horse. Those on medications get these at dinner time. Then hay all around and its goodnight herd!
